The immediate target of the program is to establish hog trade between the Visayas/Mindanao and Metro Manila. In the long run, the program seeks to institutionalize hog trade in all areas of the country.

“Batang may kinabukasan, sa wastong nutrisyon simulan!” (Give the child good nutrition today, for a brighter tomorrow!). This is the theme for this year’s nationwide Nutrition Month celebration in July. The theme focuses on the importance of giving proper nutrition to preschool children.
Preschool age is characterized by fast rate intellectual, social and emotional development and growth. That good nutrition is important during this period because the child needs adequate food for growth and development, energy for play and resistance to fight infections. During this age, food habits are also formed. At this stage, introducing the child to good food and nutrition practices will help shape his/her food habits in later years. At the same time, this period is also called the formative years where the child is most receptive to learning. With proper nutrition, the child will be able to develop his full potentials.
Results of the 6th National Nutrition Survey show that preschool age children (1 to 5 years old) are the most at-risk to malnutrition. Twenty eight (28) in every 100 children (27.6%) are underweight; 30 in every 100 children (30.4%) are short or underheight and 6 in every 100 children (5.5%) are thin. Malnutrition among this group is usually caused by inadequate food and nutrient intake, poor health or presence of infections, and poor feeding practices of mothers and caregivers. The celebration therefore is a venue to educate mothers and caregivers on proper infant and young child feeding practices.
Let’s celebrate Nutrition Month 2005 meaningfully. To achieve this, we encourage you to hang streamers in offices/food establishments/hospitals/health centers featuring the nutrition month theme; conduct/organize seminars, symposia, or conferences on nutrition for preschoolers and young children; feature appropriate information on meal planning for the preschool child and feeding the preschoolers in bulletin boards, newsletters, etc. and organize |
other special events for employees and dependents, i.e. contests, cooking demonstration and the like.
The celebration of NM every July is mandated by Section 7 of Presidential Decree No. 491 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines to create awareness on the importance of nutrition. The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Secretariat coordinates and leads in the celebration. It links with government organizations, local government units, nongovernment organizations, and the academe, media and business sector to make the celebration more meaningful.
