DA program
aims to cut pork cost
By : Mayette U. Tibayan - LDC
Who says government is not taking efforts to cut cost of basic goods?
In a pilot test the Department of Agriculture (DA) will try to cut cost of pork to consumers from P142 per kilo in the wet market to a wholesale cost of P103 per kilo and perhaps a retail cost of P110 to P120.
Pete Ocampo, DAs Livestock Development Council (LDC) Executive Director, said DA aims to cut pork cost by streamlining distribution channels and linking consumers direct to rural hog farmers. While hogs used to be transported from Mindanao live to Manila, their slaughtering right in the farms will slash costs.
The reduction comes from a cut in trade of live pigs, a cut in post harvest loss (three percent shrinkage or weight loss of live animals while on transport and a cut in cost of animal feeds, labor and shipment of bulky animals including their manure while on transport.
The already packaged products are targeted to be distributed to supermarkets which have refrigeration facilities and to wet markets
